Coach Scott Wittkop
Program Coordinator & JV Head Coach
Coach Wittkop is entering his 10th year coaching cross county at Laguna Beach High school. He started coaching little league baseball when he was 16 years old. He went on to coach football, baseball, wrestling, track, and cross country at the high school level. During his time as a high school coach, his teams have earned 9 league titles in football, 5 league titles in baseball, 6 league titles in track, and 5 league titles in cross country. The Cross Country team has made it to C.I.F. Finals all 9 years under his leadership. Wiitkop's team has finished as the CIF Finals runner-up twice (2013, 2017), and state runner-up in cross country (2013), and the 2018 team won the CIFSS D4 Title and the D4 State Championship. Coach Wittkop was named coach of the year in 2018 by the Orange County Register and LA Times. He will continue to build on his tradition of excellence at Laguna beach high school as the head coach of cross country. He currently teaches Multimedia Design, Multimedia Production, and Multimedia 3D Rapid Prototype at Laguna Beach High School. He has three kids: Claire, William, and Eva and wife Caren.
Coach Fred Pichay
Frosh-Soph Head Coach
Coach Freddy has been coaching in Laguna Beach since the early 1980s. He organizes a youth track and cross country club and is a very accomplished marathon runner, having run sub 2:45 for 26.2 miles. Coach Freddy works in the Laguna Beach Unified School District as well as the Sawdust Festival, and many other community events. When he is not running you will find Coach Freddy timing workouts or offering words of wisdom to aspiring runners.
Coach Tommy Newton-Neal
Varsity Head Coach
Coach Tommy is entering his 3rd year of coaching at Laguna Beach Cross Country and his 1st year as the Head Boys Track & Field coach. Tommy graduated from Laguna Beach High School in 2010 where he ran track and cross country, During his time as a high school athlete he was a 6 time league champion in cross country and track, 3 time all CIF, and during his senior year he was a part of the State Champion cross country team. He went on to compete as a NCAA Division 1 athlete at UC Irvine, where he ran the 1500m and 3000m steeple chase. He is currently a PE teacher for the Capo Valley School District and is enthusiastic to help the cross country and track programs continue their journey to success.
